What Is Involved In An Eye Exam?

The majority of us feel that our eyes are an important part of overall health. One of the big misconceptions is thinking that an eye exam is not needed because we see clearly. Making an annual eye exam is just as critical as an appointment with your regular physician. Here is what to expect when you come in for your examination:

  • A discussion of family eye history
  • Visual acuity tests to determine if you need glasses or contacts
  • Dilation of the eyes to test eye pressure and examine the internal structures

Eye exams are not just reading a few letters off a chart and sending you on your way.  Our optometrist can screen for early signs of eye disease such as diabetes, glaucoma, or macular degeneration. Additionally, the eyes can also be a picture of overall health, showing early indications of high blood pressure, diabetes, or even high cholesterol.

Why Eye Exams Are Important

Many eye exams that rob you of vision loss have little or no symptoms in the early development stages. There is currently no cure for macular degeneration or glaucoma, but they can be managed easier if caught early on. You may feel fine or even see clear, but an eye disease may slowly be developing. Only a trained optometrist who uses special equipment knows to identify these conditions.

Eye exams also are a time to see how well your eyes respond and function, including eye movement tests, color vision, peripheral vision, and response to light stimuli. Our eye doctor also helps provide the right vision correction for you, whether you want glasses or contact lenses. We also have specialty lenses for dry eye or other conditions that make contact lenses hard to fit.
